Spaceshot
About the Project
Spaceshot is UC Aerospace's attempt to reach space. The primary goal is to cross the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space at 100 km.
Thus far, we have designed, built and launched three rockets in a series of attempts to become the first student team to reach space with 100% certainty. In July 2021, UC Aerospace launched Into the Black II, our second attempt. This rocket reached an apogee of 33,011m and broke multiple records, including:
- Record for the highest student rocket flight outside of the United States of America.
- Three times the previous Australasian altitude record for a student rocket flight.
- Seven times the altitude achieved by the initial Into the Black rocket.
In January of this year, we launched Into the Black III. This launch has proven the club’s ability to achieve incredibly accurate trajectory and booster burns, as well as being the second successful execution of the difficult staging operation. Unfortunately, we lost communication with the rocket shortly after launching and are unable to confirm the maximum altitude reached.
The Spaceshot project has been a core pillar of the club since its inception, and we will be continuing this work into 2023.
